Live fire at the range
DO NOT BRING LIVE AMMUNITION INTO THE BUILDING. Each evening when you come to the classroom, please bring the UNLOADED handgun IN EITHER A SOFT OR HARD PISTOL CASE (if you have a safety lock please use it). The handgun will be turned in to an instructor for a safety inspection upon entering the class room. You will be using this handgun for the fundamental drills, dry
firing, and for use of electronic simulators. AGAIN “DO NOT BRING LIVE AMMUNITION INTO THE BUILDING.”
When you come to the range, you must bring a handgun, approximately 200 rounds of ammunition, eye protection, water and whatever else you may need for a few hours of outdoor activities. Ear protection (ear plugs) will be provided, but you are recommended to bring ear muffs for double protection of your ears.
Students will need to take a 50-question written test as soon as the class is over. The passing score is 90%. Exam questions will be discussed in class.
Level | Target | Distance, holding, number of rounds | Goal | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Four, 4-inch circles | 10 feet, two-handed, five rounds per circle (total 20 rounds) | Every shot must hit the circle aimed at. Cutting the line is considered a hit. | This is the minimum requirement for passing the live fire test. Please hand in the target after successfully completing this stage. Instructors may use a variety of methods to teach marksmanship before, during, or after firing each stage. |
2 | NRA B8 Repair Center | 10 yards (30 feet), two-handed, ten rounds | All ten shots must hit the 5.54-inch bullseye. | Only after completing Level 1. Levels 2-5 are not required for successful completion of the course. Instructors may take time to teach marksmanship instead of rushing through the live fire stages. |

4 | NRA B8 Target | 25 yards, twohanded, ten rounds | Score 90% or higher. | After completing Level 3. |
