SUMMARY:NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course (Live Fire Session #3)
DESCRIPTION:Anyone who wants to learn fundamental principles of safe handling of firearms and handgun marksmanship is welcome to attend the class. Classroom activities will include show-and-tell\, demonstration\, open discussion\, and practice with electronic simulators in addition to PowerPoint presentations. Range activities will be done in small groups for safety and effective learning experience. The goal of this class is to provide students\, including those who have no or little experience\, with deep understanding of principles associated with precision handgun shooting. Instructors for the class are Kirk Mittelstet\, Young Kim\, Gene Botts\, and Young Chang. \nDates and Time\nClassroom Instruction & Activities: 6:00-10:00 pm on July 9 (Tuesday) and July 11 (Thursday). Every student is expected to attend both evenings. \nLive Fire: 9:00 am-1:00 pm on July 13 (Saturday)\, 2:00-6:00 pm on July 13 (Saturday)\, or 2:00-6:00 pm on July 14 (Sunday). You will be attending only one of the three sessions. \nLocation\nClassroom Instruction & Activities: World Harvest Church\, 1718 W Lakeview Rd\, Stillwater\, OK 74075 \nLive Fire: Stillwater Rifle & Pistol Club Range (Stillwater Rifle and Pistol Club on Google maps; N36.1797° W97.1942°). You may proceed to enter the range without stopping at the gate. \nEnrollment and Fees\nYou may enroll at https://www.nrainstructors.org/CourseDetails.aspx?Courseid=835013. Enrollment will close when 20 people have signed up or on July 5\, 2024\, whichever comes first. \nThe enrollment fee is $50.00 per person. You may bring cash or a check payable to SR&PC on the first day of the class. For those who are not members or associates of SR&PC\, there is an additional charge of $6.00 for a daily use Permit for Lake McMurtry. This fee should be included with the check for the class enrollment fee. \nStudents are asked to send the following information to youngchang07@gmail.com\, srpc.president@gmail.com\, and phoyausa@gmail.com: \n\nYour first and second choices of live fire session. (You will be assigned to one of the two choices.)\nInformation of the handgun (make and model) you will be using at the range. If you do not have a handgun\, you might be able to borrow one from one of the instructors. It is your responsibility\, however\, to purchase ammunition.\n\nCourse Topics\nHandguns – semi-auto vs revolver\, single action vs double action\, loading/cocking/decocking/unloading\, failure to eject/stovepiping\, failure to feed\, clearing malfunctions \nAmmunition – types of projectiles and their purposes\, physics associated with firing \nSafe Handling of Firearms – safety rules\, causes of accidents\, handling squibs/misfires/hangfires \nFundamentals of Pistol Shooting – eye dominance\, shooting positions\, gripping\, iron sights (sight alignment and sight picture)\, red dot sights\, breath control\, hold control\, trigger control\, follow through \nSelecting Handguns – caliber\, design\, size\, weight\, ergonomics and other factors to be considered and their effects on shootability \nMaintaining Handguns \nLive fire at the range \nWhat to Bring to Classroom\nDO NOT BRING LIVE AMMUNITION INTO THE BUILDING. Each evening when you come to the classroom\, please bring the UNLOADED handgun IN EITHER A SOFT OR HARD PISTOL CASE (if you have a safety lock please use it). The handgun will be turned in to an instructor for a safety inspection upon entering the class room. You will be using this handgun for the fundamental drills\, dry\nfiring\, and for use of electronic simulators. AGAIN “DO NOT BRING LIVE AMMUNITION INTO THE BUILDING.” \nWhat to Bring to the Range\nWhen you come to the range\, you must bring a handgun\, approximately 200 rounds of ammunition\, eye protection\, water and whatever else you may need for a few hours of outdoor activities. Ear protection (ear plugs) will be provided\, but you are recommended to bring ear muffs for double protection of your ears. \nWritten Test\nStudents will need to take a 50-question written test as soon as the class is over. The passing score is 90%. Exam questions will be discussed in class. \nLive Fire Test\n\n\n\nLevel\nTarget\nDistance\, holding\, number of rounds\nGoal\nNotes\n\n\n\n\n1\nFour\, 4-inch circles\n10 feet\, two-handed\, five rounds per circle (total 20 rounds)\nEvery shot must hit the circle aimed at. Cutting the line is considered a hit.\nThis is the minimum requirement for passing the live fire test. Please hand in the target after successfully completing this stage. Instructors may use a variety of methods to teach marksmanship before\, during\, or after firing each stage.\n\n\n2\nNRA B8 Repair Center\n10 yards (30 feet)\, two-handed\, ten rounds\nAll ten shots must hit the 5.54-inch bullseye.\nOnly after completing Level 1. Levels 2-5 are not required for successful completion of the course. Instructors may take time to teach marksmanship instead of rushing through the live fire stages.\n\n\n3\nNRA B8 Repair Center\n10 yards\, one-handed\, ten rounds\nAll ten shots must hit the 5.54-inch bullseye.\nAfter completing Level 2.\n\n\n4\nNRA B8 Target\n25 yards\, twohanded\, ten rounds\nScore 90% or higher.\nAfter completing Level 3.\n\n\n5\nNRA B8 Target\n25 yards\, one-handed\, ten rounds\nScore 90% or higher.\nAfter completing Level 4.\n\n\n\nWhat is Next\nAdvanced-level\, discipline-specific\, handgun shooting courses may be offered for those who have successfully completed the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course. Everyone is recommended to participate in handgun shooting competitions to hone his or her skills.
